Protecting Our Environment
A Message from our Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,
Dennis R. Wraase
The PHI companies have long been recognized as outstanding environmental stewards. They have consistently met or surpassed industry standards for delivering the electricity our customers need while minimizing the “environmental footprint” that is an inevitable side-effect of making and transporting electricity. We have also been recognized for going beyond restoration to enhancing and even rebuilding habitats around our transmission and distribution lines, reestablishing indigenous flora and fauna that had been lost due to development and other environmental pressures.
As a leading electric power company, we recognize that we are in a position to do more than just meet the environmental standards of our industry. And we are committed to doing so – taking actions today that will deliver lasting results for generations to come. Last year we launched PHI's Blueprint for the Future. The Blueprint is focused on technology-based efficiencies in conjunction with a broad array of forward-looking initiatives all aimed at a single goal: to place PHI at the very forefront of corporate environmental leadership.
Our commitment extends from programs to help customers reduce their energy use to the everyday aspects of conducting our businesses with care and respect for the environment. We are transforming the vehicles we use to service our customers and conduct our operations into a “green fleet,” including hybrid cars and trucks and extensive use of biodiesel fuel, transforming existing offices and facilities into “green buildings” by improving their energy efficiency, and developing partnerships with suppliers and vendors to reduce waste and encourage recycling and reuse.
As you will see in this latest edition of our Annual Environmental Sustainability Report, we have achieved much in our drive to help deliver a cleaner, sustainable environment while delivering the electricity our customers need at work and at home. And we will build on these achievements with each coming year.

Matt Likovich, Tod Armstrong and Andrew Likovich were among the PHI volunteers who turned out to help clean up Beaverdam Creek in Salisbury, MD. Delmarva Power has once again joined with environmental groups throughout the region in supporting the annual Coastal Cleanup. The effort aims to remove trash from the beaches and rivers throughout the Delmarva Peninsula and southern New Jersey. The 2005 Coastal Cleanup was conducted over three weekends in September and October at over 70 sites throughout the region.
